Paul on the Church #3

In Paul's letter to the Ephesians we discover the apostle's understanding and purpose for the Church. He writes in 3:10-11 that God has made His wisdom known in the heavenly realms through the church. The text reads "His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord." Wow Paul you sure said a mouthful there!

If I understand the text correctly Paul is implying that down through the ages the wisdom of God could not be fully appreciated by those in the heavenly community until the Church was fully released through the atonement of Christ, the imparting of the Holy Spirit in to the hearts of mankind, and her going forth into the the world emulating Jesus. Then the light bulb came on and God's plan made sense!

The fullness of Christ manifest through the redemption, empowerment and release of the Church into the world was God's plan all along. Our emulating Jesus Christ in the world is essential in expressing the wisdom (validity) of God today. In order for people to connect the "God dots" today; in order for Christ to stand "head and shoulders" above the gods of this world, we must be the Church! Doesn't that make sense to you? Paul thought so.

What implications does this have for Christ followers today? What does this look like in everyday life? What say you? Thanks for stopping by!

  1. I am led to offer encouragement.

Adrian, you have been instrumental in guiding our fellowship through interesting times. Upon assuming your current role, we faced many challenges that have been difficult. Your experience, discernment, wisdom and leadership have provided a foundation of steadiness and hope. You demonstrate the “lifting up of Jesus” in your communication and practice. Thank you. I’m proud of the direction we are headed and thankful to Jesus for your presence and vision.

Greg, you use your gifts well. Your preaching is challenging and relevant. It is apparent that the organized church is ready for, and in need of, some change. Your abundant use of scripture is a secure foundation upon which to move forward. You too lift Jesus up. You consistently offer insight and discovery of Jesus in the Bible and the world and often present the opportunity for your listeners to engage God and accept His offer of relationship and life change. Your passion for service has challenged me as I explore that aspect of Jesus living in me. Thank you, keep up the good work.

Pat, as Spiritual Life Elder, your responsibility and role is great. I have witnessed you perform with humility, strength and courage. In our interactions you have demonstrated sensitivity to the diverse ways in which Jesus manifests Himself in other people and willingness to dialogue about those differences and similarities. You have exercised discernment and tolerance. I am grateful for your service. It is encouraging to see you and Greg meet after he preaches. Thank you.

Remaining Staff and Elders, thank you for your service and effort. The lack of personal mention has no implication. You are appreciated.

    Steve
